Many people assume that their frown lines are the result of the movement of their facial muscles, and this is partially the case. But this reasoning hides two other very real factors causing frown lines and other facial wrinkling: the sun and loss of fat pads. The sun and other sources of ultraviolet light damage our skin, and this damage makes the face more susceptible to wrinkling. The normal collagen and elastin matrix that comprises our skin changes and creates abnormal elastic fibers. Whereas normal skin is 80% collagen and 4% elastic fiber mesh network, sun-damaged skin can be as much as 80% abnormal elastic fibers, which are clumps of abnormal elastin tissue. This is like a rubber band, which stretches and recoils, changing into a rubber tire, which cannot properly bend and stretch although it is made of a flexible material. Those adaptable elastin fibers are destroyed by exposure to ultraviolet light, as is the normal collagen, and replaced by ineffective elastic material that is called solar elastosis. Those lines that appear are the result of facial muscles interacting with sun-damaged skin.
The best way to avoid this type of skin damage is prevention, by limiting your exposure to the sun, and protecting yourself with a high SPF sunscreen when you are exposed.
The loss of fat pads on the cheeks, under the eyes and in the mid-face region also causes frown lines. Youthful faces are plump and have a fullness through the mid-face. When these fat pads diminish, there is nothing under the often sun damaged skin to hold it up. The skin then “falls” down, causing deep lines and what can appear to be a permanent frown.
